Bob Carroll
"Get involved, improve yourself, learn" is advice Bob Carroll gives to those people, like himself, who grew up exposed to just one culture. The remedy for him has been the Indian Center, where he's been involved from the start and a Board member since 1971.
Before that, as a television personality and actor, he applied the same kind of "total commitment" when he unrelentingly searched out a character's "deep-down" personality. In the live television shows of the 1940's (he's appeared on Playhouse 90) actors didn't have time to memorize all the lines, "we'd try to get the character down, and then react as he might have."
Likewise, he knows he can only scratch the surface of the Indian's magnificent culture. "There's just so much they have experienced that we have no standard with which to compare. It's fascinating," he says, "completely fascinating."
