Jay Hunter (Winnebago)
Executive Director
When members of the Indian community first began making their plans for a cultural center, the meetings were held in homes and offices all over Wichita - three people here, six people there, all with differing ideas on "how to make it work." One man, though, who seemed to have the knack of "putting it all together." The continuity he provided at the early sessions was significant to the Indian Center's development. "There had to be a singleness of purpose or we couldn't have gone any further," he says.
Under his guidance, the Center has grown from "nothing but a dream" to a multi-million dollar facility that's been called "one of a kind" by sociologists. Most everyone credits Jay as being the motivating force, behind the scenes, to make the Center what it is today. "After the meeting, someone still has to do the work," someone once said. For the Center, that person was Jay.
