Absentee Shawnee

In the middle of the 1600's the Shawnee people lived in the Cumberland River Valley in today's state of Tennessee. Before that time it is believed they were a nomadic tribe roaming the lands further to the north.
The Shawnee chief, Tecumseh (1768-1813), his brother, and allied tribes were instrumental in resisting the movement of settlers into the Ohio River Valley. After many battles and the death of Tecumseh, the Shawnee divided into smaller groups and moved west. Some settled in Oklahoma and others joined the Cherokee.
About the Flag:
The moon represents one of God's many creations. The portrait depicts Tecumseh, a famous chief of the Shawnee tribe. The feathers represent two great warriors, Tecumseh and his brother the "Prophet". The words "LI-SI-WI-NI-WNI" means "among the Shawnee" and is also the name of the tribe's recreational community at Lake Thunderbird, Tennessee. The two sets of stars symbolize Tecumseh's rank of Brigadier General in the British Army.
