Mississippi Band of Choctaw

The Choctaw are known for being one of the "Five Civilized Tribes," along with the Cherokee, Creek, Chickasaw and Seminole. They were given this name because the first Europeans who came in contact with them were amazed at the sophistication of their culture. The Choctaw were excellent farmers and their lifestyle was quite comfortable.
The Mississippi Band of Choctaw is one of the two groups of Choctaw that originated in the southeast part of the United States. During the time of Indian Removal, some Choctaw decided to move to Indian Territory (Oklahoma), while the Mississippi Band chose to remain close to their woodland origins.
About the Flag:
The flag was officially adopted by the Mississippi Band of the Choctaw in the 1970's. The design includes a drum along with stickball sticks and balls. The hickory sticks represent the strong will of the Choctaw people to prosper. The drum stands for the voice of the people. The red color represents the blood shed by the Choctaw people in many battles; white, the purity of the tribal culture; and blue, the hope for the future prosperity of the tribe. The colors also represent the flag of United States.
